James McMeekin was born April 8, 1845, in County Down, Ireland, and departed this life October 31st, 1926, from the family home in Shelby, Nebr. He was married January 4, 1880, to Elizabeth McWha in the Presbyterian Church in Millisle, County Down, Ireland, and Mr. and Mrs. McMeekin came to America the same year, reaching Coal Valley, Illinois, March 8th. They there resided for four years, when they came to Polk county, Nebraska, in 1884, making their home five miles north of Shelby until 1917 when the home was established in Shelby. To Mr. and Mrs. McMeekin there were born twelve children, all of whom with their mother survive. The children are George, James, Frank, Robert and Hugh, all of Shelby, and John of Fremont, Nebr., Isabel From, of Harrison, Nebr., Nellie Ingalls, Margaret Funkhouser, Mary Inness, Helen Inks, all of Shelby, and Ruby A. of Sargent, Nebr. He is also survived by one sister, Jane Taylor, who is living in Ireland, and by thirty grandchildren. Mr. McMeekin received his early religious training in the Episcopal Church, but thirty years ago became a member of the United Brethren Church during the Pastorate of Rev. J.M. Haskins. He served the Church both as Steward and Trustee. In accordance with the often expressed wishes of the deceased, the funeral services were conducted with the utmost simplicity, his friends being left to write his eulogy in their own hearts. Funeral services conducted by the Revs. G.T. Savery and C.M. Shaub were held at the United Brethren Church in Shelby, November 2, 1926, and the body was born to its last resting place in Graceland, the Shelby Cemetery, by his six sons.
