According to the Illinois State University Yearbook,1892, John W. Cook was born in Oneida county, New York, and moved to Kappa, McLean in 1853. He graduated from the Illinois State Normal University in 1865. He worked as a principal in Brimfield, Peoria county, Illinois and at the model department of the I.S.N.U. He became a professor of various subjects, including History, Geography, Mathematics, and Physics until he assumed the Presidency at Illinois State University in 1890.
