LONGWOOD, Fla. - Marian Buck Hoopes, age 99, of Southland Suites of Longwood, FL died Nov. 19, 2009. She was born Aug. 1, 1910 in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of May Elizabeth Broughton Buck and Ashley Mitchell Buck. Always a teacher and artist, she dedicated her body to the Anatomical Board of the State of Florida in Gainesville, for use in medical research and education. Marian was always helping others, but this is considered her greatest accomplishment as she helps teach medical students to become doctors.

Marian graduated from P.S.#45 and Lafayette High School in Buffalo where she excelled at basketball and soccer. She then graduated from the Albright School of Art and the University of Buffalo, with a B.A. in Fine Arts. During her college years, she enjoyed the summers at Camp Nundawga located at the shores of Lake Ontario where she worked as a lifeguard. After college she taught dress design at Girls' Vocational School in Buffalo. In 1937 she married Thomas W. Hoopes Jr. and moved to Springfield Ill where he owned and operated Sportsman's Center. She raised her family of four children as she continued her career as professor of art at Springfield College of Illinois, teaching art and art history until her retirement in 1978. During her many years in Springfield she was accomplished in oil, watercolor, ink and charcoal sketching. She also became proficient as a goldsmith, making many fine pieces of gold jewelry. Marian also painted thousands of beautiful watercolor paintings throughout her lifetime, many of which were of Springfield buildings, landmarks, portraits and animals. In Springfield, Marian belonged to the American Association of University Women, Springfield Art Association, Springfield Ceramics and Craft Club and the Sangamon Watercolor Society. She also served as an usher at the U of I Auditorium and volunteered at the Sojourn Thrift House. In 2000, Marian moved to Florida where she was a member of the Sanford-Seminole Art Association and the Casselberry Art Association.

Marian's 89-year-old brother Chester Buck of Sun City Center, FL says about his sister, "Ask me about my sister Marian, the kid with the long legs. One day I was trying to evade her and she started to chase me. You & I know girls can't run fast, so she lifted her skirt and took after me and caught me in three strides. Don't ever underestimate the ambition of a woman when they are set in their ways." Son Thomas says of his mother's passing, he is reminded of the poem, "If you knew Mother well she would have told you: When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a manner that when you die, the world will cry and you will rejoice." - Unknown. Daughter Dianne says, "I am in awe of her life. She was an accomplished artist, teacher and friend to all. Mom was a kind and gentle woman who raised 4 children, several grandchildren, and she even looked after neighborhood children. She had all of us to care for, and yet she was able to continue her art career. Today we are blessed to have her memories and hundreds of her beautiful paintings and jewelry. But her greatest gift is to the Anatomical Board in Gainesville to help the medical students. She had a wonderful life."

Marian is preceded in death by her parents, husband Thomas Hoopes Jr., brothers Wallace Buck, Albert "Jack" Buck, Dudley Buck, sister Margaret Buck, daughter Judith Crouse, son Ashley Hoopes, and grandson Brian Hoopes. She is survived by brother Chester Buck, Sun City Center, son Thomas W. Hoopes III (Mary), Casselberry, daughter Dianne Randolph (Timothy), Orlando. Also grandchildren Sue King, Randy Crouse, Kimberly Seamens, Tim Randolph II, Renae Hamilton, Thomas Hoopes IV, Jason Hoopes, plus many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life with family and friends will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Buck family plot in Box Wood Cemetery in Medina, NY.
