William Deering was a Chicago businessman and philanthropist. He was the founder of the Deering Harvester Company which later merged with other companies to become the International Harvester Company. He was an early president of the International Harvester Company. Much biographical information about him is available in Wikipedia and other online and print sources. He and his children endowed the Deering Library at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

William Deering's first wife was Abby Reed Barbour (died 1856, findagrave listing unknown). They had two children: Charles Deering (died 1927, buried in this cemetery lot); and Abby Deering (died 1906, findagrave listing unknown), who married Richard Flint Howe (died 1943, findagrave listing unknown).

William Deering's second wife was Clara Barbour Cummings Hamilton (died 1918, buried in this cemetery lot). They had one child, James Deering (died 1925, buried in this cemetery lot).

This Deering burial lot includes seven graves. At the head of the burial lot is a solid granite stone, about 4 ft high, 6 ft wide, and 3 ft deep, bearing only the word "DEERING". In front of this stone are seven identical brass plaques, each 23 inches wide and 10 inches high, mounted flat on identical concrete bases, with the names and inscriptions for seven family members. These seven plaques, from left to right, with findagrave numbers, are for:
1. Charles William Case Deering, son of Charles Deering. #85828597.
2. James Deering, son of William Deering and his second wife Clara Deering. #85828995.
3. Clara (Hamilton) Deering, second wife of William Deering. #85829339.
4. William Deering (this person). #45402102
5. Charles Deering, son of William Deering and his first wife Abby Reed (Barbour) Deering. #84800919.
6. Marion (Whipple) Deering, wife of Charles Deering. #85829885.
7. Roger Deering, son of Charles and Marion Deering. #85830110.

To the right of this group of Deering graves is a lot with numerous graves of the McCormick family, which was associated with the Deering family in the International Harvester Company. The lot contains a solid granite stone identical to the Deering stone with only the name "McCORMICK", and several flat brass grave markers identical to the ones in the Deering lot. The identical stones and layouts of the two lots implies that they were designed by the same person. These McCormick graves can be found in the index for this cemetery. One of the markers is of Charles Deering's daughter Marion Deering McCormick, #85950684.

It is very likely that thes two Deering and McCormick grave lots were designed by the same designer, under the direction of a member of one of the families.
