BORGER - Luis P. Serrano, 89, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009.

Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday in Puerto de Luna, N.M. Mass wil be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Puerto de Luna. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Santa Rosa, N.M. Local arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. New Mexico arrangements are by Chavez Funeral Home.

Luis Serrano was born April 27, 1920, in Santa Rosa to Simon and Petra Serrano. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in October 1945 at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He married the love of his life, Dulce Mares, on July 25, 1949, in Santa Rosa. Throughout most of his life he worked for Gulf Oil Co. He also was a successful commercial business owner.

Luis was a charter member of the Knight of Columbus Council 5146 Gabriel Coury in Santa Rosa. He was the first Grand Knight and served in that position on three different occasions during his K of C career. As a member of the Santa Rosa volunteer fire department ,he also served as fire chief. A lifelong supporter of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and School, he served on the church parish council and was a member of the Lions Club and the American Legion.

Luis was a devoted and loving husband and father who cherished his family. He loved to tell stories of his days in the war and never met a stranger. Luis also enjoyed fishing, was an avid bird watcher and loved gardening.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Serrano, on Jan. 23, 1993; two sisters; and a brother.

Survivors include his wife, Dulce; four daughters, Christina Lopez and husband Randy of Borger, Louise Montoya and husband Fred of Las Cruces, N.M., Janna Kiehl and husband John of Amarillo, and Bernadine Young and husband Martin, currently of Bogata, Colombia; a sister, Alice Romo of Coppell; six brothers, Adolph Serrano, Robert Serrano and Charles Serrano, all of Santa Rosa, Simon Serrano Jr., and Zolio Serrano, both of Albuquerque, N.M., and Frank Serrano of The Woodlands; eight grandchildren, Martin Lopez, Carmela Gandy and husband Toby, Erica Padilla, Janelle Navarro and husband Rudy, Zak Weed and husband Terry, Blane Young and wife Hannah, Spencer Young, and Dennissa Young; three great-grandchildren, Cole Gandy, Asia Gandy and Brody Gandy.

The family suggest memorials be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 439 S. Third St., Santa Rosa, NM 88435.

The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home in Amarillo.
