Monk, Antagonist of Martin Luther. In 1489 he joined the Dominican Order. By the request of the Polish provincial he was appointed inquisitor for Poland and later returned to Saxony. In 1517 the Pope made him commissioner of indulgences for all of Germany. Half of the money the indulgence preachers raised selling indulgences, went to Rome to aid the construction of Saint Peter's Cathedral. The other half was divided between the preacher and Archbishop Albrecht of Brandenburg, who owed the Fugger family a fortune. In 1518 he was promoted to doctor of theology. In the same year he retired to the Dominican monastery in Leipzig. He was interred before the high altar of the Dominican church of Saint Paul. Due to reconstruction over the centuries the location of his grave would have been outside the eastern wall when the church was blown up in 1968.
