He was born January 17, 1939, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the son of Mildred Elizabeth (Appleby) Mitchell and Joe D. Mitchell, Jr. The family moved to Stilwell , Oklahoma in 1945.
He was a retired U. S. Air Force Major, serving in the Vietnam Conflict.
He was a member of Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Wanda Gene (McGee) Mitchell; and a brother, James Richard Mitchell.
Survivors include a son, Gordon Mitchell, of Carmichael, California; a daughter, Dana Mitchell, of Sacramento, California; a granddaughter; three brothers, Joseph D. "J.D." Mitchell of Omaha, Nebraska, David Mitchell of Sacramento and John Mitchell of Cane Hill; a sister, Virginia Burge of Saint George, Utah; two aunts, Helen Virginia Young of Fayetteville and Annis Appleby Fogleman of Little Rock, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Rolling Hills Baptist Church, with Chaplain Brigadier General William Brock Watson, retired, officiating.
Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Fayetteville.
