Civil War Union Army Officer. 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Son of Henry and Mary (Rickert) Amidon. His father reportedly died in California when he was about twelve. A Henry Amidon, born about 1816 in Connecticut, was residing in El Dorado County, Calif. according to the 1852 state census.

"John R. Amidon, banker of Cedar Rapids, died there Monday. He was with Sherman on his march to the sea and participated in the battles of Chancellorsville, Antietam, and Gettysburg."

John R. Amidon, quartermaster sergeant company I, 3d Wisconsin volunteer infantry; was transferred to company B and promoted to second lieutenant; died July 1, 1912.
