John H. McGuffey
Funeral services for John H. McGuffey, 86, were conducted in the Johnson Chapel Monday afternoon by the Rev. W. LeRoy Elster, pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church. After the services the body was taken, to Spokane for cremation.
John Henry McGuffey was born in Palmyra, Neb., Feb. 18, 1872, a son of Milo and Harriet Graves McGuffey. He received his elementary education and grew to manhood there. In 1896, he graduated from the University of nebraska at Lincoln. In 1900, he went to Cody, Wyo., where he operated a hardware store with his, brother. On Oct. 9, 1907, he married to Selma Rundquist in Rockford, Ill.
In 1908, they came to Missoula, where he was engaged in business until 1920, when they went to Moiese and engaged in the dairy business for more than 25 years. They retired and moved to Ronan where they lived until 1957 when they came to Kalispell to make their home. His uncle wrote the famous McGuffey's Reader which was extensively used in elementary education throughout the nation. He was also a direct descendant of the party that came with Capt. John Smith and landed in Virginia in 1608.
He is survived by his wife Selma in Kalispell; a sister, Miss Jennie McGuffey in Seattle, and two nephews. Mr. McGuffey died in Kalispell Feb. 21.
