Melva Mae was the daughter of Wilmer and Ida Cadmus of Paterson. She earned a master's degree from Paterson State College and subsequently taught third grade in Paterson School #13 for 45 years.
At the age of 69, she got married for the first time to James Radcliffe. James passed away after only six years of marriage. When Melva was 84, she was married for the second time to James' brother Hartley Radcliffe. During her married years, she enjoyed traveling the world -- visiting exotic places such as the Mediterranean and the Far East as well as less exotic places like Europe. Hartley died in 1998 leaving Melva a widow for the second time.
