Godfrey Hunter James was born in Penrod, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky on the 21st of May 1897. He attended high school in Greenville, Kentucky. The author of this paper, Dorothy Louise James Turner, is his daughter.
He married Margaret Elizabeth Moseley on the 26th of November 1916 in Springfield, Tennessee. Martine Moseley stood with them when they wed. The couple met on the train when Margaret was teaching school in Dunmore, near Penrod.
Their first child, Dorothy Louise James, was born the 21st of August, 1917 in Dunmore. Dr. Addison James, Godfrey's father, had died in 1910, and the young couple moved to Penrod after Dorothy was born, to live with his widowed mother, Cordelia Penrod James. They continued living at the home until Cordelia passed in 1919. At that time the home and land were left to Godfrey.
Anna Margaret James was born 11 January, 1920, George Allen James followed on 27th of April 1922, and Marion Elizabeth was born the 3rd of August, 1925, all in Penrod, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.
When Marion James was about six years old, Godfrey and Margaret moved their family to south Florida to live near the Moseley family.
The James family home in Penrod was rented to Bradley James. The valuables were packed up and taken to Florida. The author recalled, memorabilia and family collectibles such as an "Atwater Kent Radio, a cane given to Dr. A. D. James by pages at the U. S. House of Representatives, and a set of books about Theodore Roosevelt". The books were significant since A. D. James was Representative under President Roosevelt's administration.
The three older children were dressed in brown Indian suits and their Mother, Margaret, was "dressed in a black dress which faded all over Maryon." They headed south to Delray Beach, home of the Moseley grandparents where they first lived with Margaret's family, then to Boca Raton where Godfrey worked as a bookkeeper for Bender's Garage. They later moved to Boynton Beach where they purchased a home.
This home in Boynton Beach, was where, on the 26th of September, 1927. Robert Hunter James was born and William Godfrey James followed on 8 January 1930. Arthur Lewis James was born the first of January 1932 and Nancy Irene soon joined the family as a "Christmas baby" on the 23rd of December, 1933. As was customary at that time, the four children were born at home.
Dorothy Louise first married Robert Garland Miller. This union was of short duration and Dorothy then married J. W. (Jack Wilmore), Turner. They lived in Heber City, Utah.
Anna Margaret married William Carl Metcalf.
George Allen married Felice Priest. He died in Boynton on the 20th of August 1962 and was buried in the Boynton Cemetery.
Maryon Elizabeth married Jarmon C. Smith and Robert Hunter married Jean Burns. William Godfrey married Bobbie McFee and Arthur Lewis married Jean Mareno. Nancy Irene married Thomas Jones.
Godfrey Hunter James was working alone and away from the family in Mobile, Alabama when he died on the 6th of December 1949. He and Margaret are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in West Palm Beach, Florida.
