"-- He was named Plato, but he was always called Bert, and used the initial, P.E. for business.

He moved with his family to Edenville, Marshall county, IA in about 1883, where his father served as pastor of the Methodist Protestant Church. He graduated from high school there in 1895, and shortly after that the family moved to Kansas City, Kansas.

He studied civil engineering, and pursued that profession all of his life, working in various places including Texas, Illinois and Canada. By 1927 he had moved to Washington, D.C. and served as a civil Engineer in the government service until his retirement. He never married.

Living in Washington for so many years he availed himself of the facilities of the Library of Congress to do extensive historical research. He was deeply concerned because he felt the country had strayed from the intentions of the founding fathers, and had lost its original purpose as set forth in the constitution. This led him to write a lengthy book, never published, which he entitled, "The Decline and Fall of the Republic." The story of the Fourth of July celebration and the history of Edenville (Rhodes, IA) was a part of that manuscript."
