Paul Heinzel, age 84 of La Crosse, passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.

He was born in Milwaukee on April 2, 1925, to Matthew and Tillie (Pimiskern) Heinzel. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Milwaukee by the Rev. Gornitzka. Paul attended vocational school in Milwaukee before joining the Navy in 1943, had his boot camp training in Farragut, Idaho, and was sent to the South Pacific, serving in New Hebrides, New Zealand, Soleman Islands and Germany, where he was when the war ended. Paul came home to Milwaukee, where he met and married Agnes Ellefson on June 28, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Viroqua by the Rev. Nordsletten. In 1950, Paul started in the carpenter trade as an apprentice. He had been a member of the Carpenter's Union, serving as president, many offices and volunteer programs. He was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church since 1964, the Carving Club, and his love of woodworking carried throughout his life. Paul and Agnes loved to travel and always had an interesting story about the people they met and the adventures they had. They never hesitated to take a secondary road and stop to take pictures of interesting barns. Paul was a loving and devoted husband and probably the best father ever. The door to their home was always open to all of their children's friends and was father to them at times as well.

Paul will be dearly missed by Agnes and his family, but his memory will always be carried in our hearts.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Agnes; three sons, Ronald (Stephany), Mark (Diane) and Michael (Margarita); one daughter, Beth (Gary) Rock; five sisters, Toots, Goldie, Catherine, Lois and Judy; five grandchildren, Sam, Jamie, Paul, Hannah and Christian; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Matthew, David and Albert; one sister, Mavis; and a grandson, James.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2135 Weston St., La Crosse. The Rev. Bruce Iverson will officiate and burial will be in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Viroqua. Friends may call at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. and again at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Western Technical College/Apprenticeship Program, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation.
