Married to Sarah Jane Sinclair on 9 Sep 1832 in Orange County, Indiana.
On September 26,1838 Benjamin purchased 40 acres of government land on the Patoka River for 12.5 cents per acre. There had been a stock market crash in 1837 and land prices were down from $1.25 per acre. After the Depression of the 1840s he purchased more land until he had accumulated a total of 400 acres of prime farm land on the Patoka River. He was a prosperous farmer with a real estate value of $2500 and personal estate value of $1500.
The old Carroll homestead is now under water, covered by Patoka Lake during the Patoka Reservoir project.
Benjamin's headstone is missing and there were approximately 26 unmarked graves when the Carroll Cemetery was moved from the Newton Stewart area to the new cemetery.
Benjamin and Sally were the parents of 11 documented children: Nancy A., John S., George W., Elizabeth, James W., Benjamin Jr., Isaac, Abigail, Hickman, Sarah Jane and Joseph W.
After his wife Sally died in 1882, Benjamin married again in Dubois County to Rebecka Crecelius. Benjamin was Rebecka's 4th husband (Weedman, Morgan, Newton) and she contested his will on his death.
Benjamin was originally buried with his wife Sally, but was left behind in one of the unmarked graves when the lake flooded the original cemetery. There is no stone for him in the Carroll Cemetery section at Patoka Memorial Cemetery but he shall be memorialized here, next to his wife where he was originally buried before the cemetery was moved.
