The son of Jonathan & Naomi (Smith) Gribble, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 1, 1864, as a private with Battery C, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa). He gave his age as seventeen, which presumably means he had parental permission to enlist. He was promoted to corporal October 21, 1865, and honorably discharged with his battery November 9, 1865.

He married Rebecca Miller and fathered Joseph Raymond (b. 05/14/72) and Margaret Rebecca "Maggie" (b. 06/25/75). The family settled in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, then moved to Aurora, Kane County, Illinois, where William took work with the railroad, rising to the position of engineer with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad.

During the latter part of September and into October 1893, newspapers all over the eastern part of the United States reported the tragic head-on collision of two trains three and a half miles north of Streator, Illinois. Although ten were injured, the sole fatality was engineer William Gribble. A subsequent investigation ruled the other train crew to have been at fault.
