William (Will) was born on 28 December 1881 in Norwalk, CT.
Will married Anna E. Hassenau. They adopted one child, Wallace. Wallace died in Chicago in a gang fight.
Will manned the lighthouse on a point in Stratford, CT. He was assistant keeper from 1913 through 1921 and keeper from 1921 through retirement in 1945. Albert A. Haviland would visit in the summer. "In August 1922, Keeper William Petzolt and his assistant went to the aid of the power vessel Ellen May. They took the 30 passengers to the lighthouse, where they dried their clothes, gave them a meal, and put them on a trolley for New Haven."
Will was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, Dewey camp 7033. Will also belonged to the Sons of Hermann, Lodge 4 of Stamford.
Will died in 1965 in Norwalk, CT. He is buried in Emmanuel Cemetery, Stamford, CT.
