Mayor Killed In Accident Near Bend

Clifford J. Benson, mayor of John Day, was fatally injured in an automobile accident about 50 miles east of Bend on highway 20 Sunday morning. Mrs. Benson, a teacher at Grant Union high school, was critically injured and was taken to a Bend hospital. Also hospitalized with less serious injuries were the couple's two daughters, both University of Oregon students.

According to reports, the Benson family was traveling toward Bend on icy roads when their vehicle collided, almost head-on, with a loaded automobile-carrying tractor-trailer. The driver of the latter vehicle was not seriously injured. Benson was said to be dead on arrival in Bend and was taken to a funeral parlor in that city. Mrs. Sylvia Benson suffered fractures of both legs and both arms, a crushed rib-cage, a ruptured spleen, punctured lungs and facial injuries. She was reported this morning to be still on the critical list but showing some improvement. She has recovered consciousness at intervals. She underwent several hours of surgery and more will be required.

In addition to being mayor of John Day, Benson was a partner and operator of Benson Bros. Shoe Store and for many years past has been chairman of the board of directors of the Grant county intermediate education district and its predecessor, the Grant county rural school board. He became mayor of John Day in the spring of 1963 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Herman Oliver. He was not a candidate for election to the office this year.

Funeral services for Mayor Benson will be conducted at Driskill Mortuary chapel in John Day at 2 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Robert Parlour, vicar of St. Thomas' Episcopal church officiating. Graveside services in Canyon City cemetery will be conducted by Canyon City lodge No. 04, A. F. & A. M. According to the Rev. Mr. Parlour, the two daughters will be able to attend but Mrs. Benson will remain in the Bend hospital.

Relatives have indicated that those who wish to do so may make contributions to either the Blue Mountain general hospital or the Shrine hospital for crippled children in Clifford Benson's name. Contributions to the Shrine hospital should be turned over to Warren Everett.

Al Reinertson, secretary of the Grant county chamber of commerce, said this morning that business places in John Day will close for the funeral Thursday, with the closure from about 1:45 p.m. until about 3:15 p.m.
