John Day Valley Ranger
July 12, 1946
Bradford Henry Benson, well known hotel man of John Day, died suddenly Tuesday morning following an acute attack of heart trouble. He was 49 years of age, and his untimely death came as a shock to his family and friends as he had been in apparent good health and was working a few minutes before the fatal attack.
Funeral services were held from the Driskill Mortuary chapel, Thursday afternoon, July 11, conducted by Rev. Mrs. Josie Bach, pastor of the John Day Methodist church. Interment was in the Canyon City cemetery.
Mr. Benson, son of Mrs. Nicoline Benson and the late John H. Benson was born, December 24, 1896 in John Day. He received his education in the John Day schools. A severe sickness in his teen years left his eyesight impaired, but he managed to do his work besides finding time to help others. He was associated with his father and mother in the hotel business and, last December, he and his brother, Clifford, bought their mother's interest in the business.
"Brad," as he was affectionately known, was a man who went about his business and bothered no one, but was always helping others. The past several weeks it has been common sight to see him on the streets helping his little niece, Carolyn, walk. Brad was loved and admired by all who knew him, gaining friends every day.
He leaves to mourn his passing his mother, Mrs. John Benson, John Day; two sisters, Mrs. Margery MacLaren of Portland and Mrs. Kristine Cauble, John Day; six brothers, Dewey Benson, Mt. Vernon, Nels Benson, John Day, Clifford and George Benson, John Day, and Lennart and Jack Benson, Portland; also three nephews and five nieces, besides a host of friends.
He was a member of the Modern Woodman of America.
