Taylors Falls Journal - 7-Feb-1901, Thursday

Mrs. Matilda Folsom died at her home at Taylors Falls, Minn., Monday morning, Feb. 4, 1901 at eight o'clock, aged 81 years, 9 months, and 21 days. She was born at Southbridge, Mass., April 13, 1819 and was married to Ward Weeks Folsom at that place on Nov. 17, 1844.

She had five children, three sons and two daughters, two of whom survive her, Ed[ward] H. Folsom of this place and Carrie M. Barlow of Columbus, Ohio. Of her children, Ward died in 1865, Chas. W. in 1876, and Ella in 1878. Her husband died in 1884.

The family came to Taylors Falls in 1856 and have made this their home since then. She leaves eleven grandchildren, (two of whom Miss Sadie Folsom and Wilber Folsom made their home with her), and seven great-grandchildren.

Hers had been an industrious active life, coming west with a young family in pioneer times and looking after the welfare of her grandchildren. She attended a seminary at Mt. Holyoke, was well educated, and a constant reader, and kept well informed on the issues of the times. She was a member of the M. E. church and was devoted and consistent in her church work.

She was the last of a family of four brothers and two sisters, all of whom died in advanced years. She retained her vitality and faculties until the past year and passed away as easily as though dropping off in sleep.

The funeral was private from the family residence on Wednesday afternoon, the remains being interred in the family lot in the Kahbakong cemetery beside those of her husband, sister, and three children.
