Another brother editor has passed into the great beyond. While sitting on a stool setting type for his current issue, Ed[ward] H. Folsom, for more than a half a century, the editor and publisher of The Taylors Falls Journal, was struck by heart failure at 5 p.m., and death came almost instantly.

The Taylors Falls Journal bearing the date of June 22, was therefore his last issue.

When a humble country newspaper editor passes into his last reward, the writer cannot help thinking of the many times it has been his painful duty to chronicle the death of others, many times paying words of tribute for the kindly purpose of soothing the sorrowing ones, only to learn a short time afterward that he may become an object of hatred from the very self-same people.

It was not our good fortune to know Mr. Folsom intimately, but we came in contact with him in a business way on several occasions and found him to be just and honest.

Beneath his rugged exterior their [sic] beat a warm and tender heart, and his faults whatever they were, shall find no room in this issue. The life of every editor who does his duty is in reality a pure sacrifice for a community's good. This may not be admitted, but it is true nevertheless.

The following biographical data is taken from his own paper, which was undoubtedly prepared by one of his daughters and presented in a most unassuming style:

"February 23, 1860, the first number of the Taylors Falls Reporter, now the Journal, was published by Frank H. Pratt, [with] Ed. H. Folsom, and Sam Fifield in the office as apprentices. The publication has been continued without interruption during all of these years though for a few brief periods of time Mr. Folsom was not connected with it.

He started the Stillwater Lumberman in 1875 and was its owner and publisher for two years when he sold out and returned to Taylors Falls. He became the proprietor of the St. Croix Valley Standard in 1904 and published it until 1907 when he sold it to his son C. W. Folsom who soon sold it to others.

He was among the first persons to be employed as a toll collector on the old toll bridge across the St. Croix river at this place. As a young man, he spent several summers working on the steamboats that run on the Minnesota and St. Croix rivers and was one of the very youngest men who served as Captain.

In the Minnesota Senate, he held the positions as an engrossing clerk in 1875, assistant secretary in 1876 and 1878, and secretary in 1893. And was always known as a just and public-spirited man.

He was born at Southbridge, Mass., on September 28, 1847, and came with his parents to Taylors Falls in 1856. He was married to Miss Susan F. Way in 1868. Five children were born to them.

He is survived by his widow; two sons, Chas. Ward and S. Francis; two daughters, Mrs. Carrie Cole and Kate, and a sister Mrs. Henry E. Barlow of Columbus, Ohio. His son Edward died seven years ago.

He was a member of and always much interested in the Masonic and the Knights of Pythias Orders.

He had been in poor health for more than a year and although a great gardener, he managed to attend to his regular work and died of heart failure at 5 o'clock p.m. [. . .] while sitting on a stool in his office setting type.

He was buried in Kahbakong cemetery on Thursday forenoon, June 22"

The editor of the Press desires to extend his hearty sympathy to the bereaved widow and children. May he rest in peace.
