In the spring of 1850, at the age of 17, Joshua came to New Hartford in Pike County and owned 160 acres of land he self-improved and on which he farmed and raised stock. He also had a fine orchard of choice fruit, which completely surrounded the home. In 1860 he crossed the plains to Pike's Peak where he remained following mining for some months, after which he returned home to Pike County. He united with the Baptist Church in 1858. He was considered of fine reputation and a good businessman.
