Obituary

Funeral services for Edward Koth, pioneer merchant and former Odessa mayor, were held from the Odessa Baptist church on Tuesday, the Rev A. Foll officiating, with burial in the Odessa Cemetery, under the direction of the Strate Funeral Home. Mr. Koth had an active part in the growth of Odessa almost from its inception. He came to Odessa the year after its incorporation as a town, engaged in the mercantile business here most of the remainder of his life. Born, Oct 7, 1881, at Parkston, SD, he attended the schools there, taking advanced work at Mitchell, SD, and Freeman, NE, and getting his early mercantile experience there. At his start here he was a member of the firm of Koth and Son, and in 1906 this firm consolidated with the Michaelsens in the Odessa Mercantile Company, selling his interest in the firm in 1912, then moving to Spokane, where he was with the Jensen-King-Byrd company. Shortly after this the building housing the Odessa firm was destroyed by fire, and the firm was liquidated. Two of the partners, J. C. Michaelsen and Henry Michaelsen were considering a new firm, and Mr. Koth returned from Spokane to go in with them. In the fall of 1913 his brother, Nath Koth, joined the firm, the four partners continuing to operate the store until Sept 1945, when Elmer and Henry Michaelsen, sons of H. E. Michaelsen of the partnership, bought the interests of the three other partners and the firm became known as Michaelsen's. In August, 1906, Mr. Koth was married to Miss Ella Bens in Wisconsin. Three sons were born to them. Mrs. Koth died in 1939. Late in 1943 Mr. Koth was remarried, to Mrs. Elsie James of Marlin, and after he had disposed of his store interests, they lived for a time at Marlin and in the Spokane area, returning to Odessa this fall. The death of Mr. Koth was the second tragedy to strike with a short time for Mrs Koth, one (of) her sons, John James, being killed, and a second son, Spencer James, seriously injured in an airplane crash. He is survived by his wife, at the home here; three sons, Everett, Longview; Milton, Odessa, and Wesley, Brooklyn, NY; his mother, Mrs. Katherine Koth, Odessa; three sisters, Mrs. John C. Schorzman, Odessa; Mrs. Rose Weber, Los Angeles, CA; and Mrs. Helen Brandt, Spokane; two brothers, Nath Koth, Odessa, and Fred G. Koth, Draper, SD. Wesley Kother, who is taking special training in Brooklyn, was unable to come." (Odessa Record: 12-25-1947)
