John was born in Hamilton , Canada to William and Celista Sherman. He married at least once, to a Mary. He had two children before removing to Illinois by 1843. The family was in Lake County, Indiana by 1845 where he settled in Crown Point. He was reported in the census records as being a blacksmith and carpenter.

He had the following children: William, Abel, Margaret, Mary, Celista (died young), Lydia, Celista, Rosalinda, and Adelia. His wife Mary would have certainly been the mother of Celista, Rosalinda, and Adelia if not more of John's children. Mary died by 1860.

John then volunteers for the Civil War at the age of 52 or 53. He was mustered in on November 29, 1962 to the 24th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery at Indianapolis where he served as an artificer. John died in Indianapolis on February 27, 1863. His unit was not deployed until March 13, 1863. He was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Indianapolis where he was later exhumed and buried in the Crown Hill National Cemetery, memorial 14661564.

John's daughter Adelia (Frances A.) filed for a Civil War pension in 1889 on behalf of her and her younger siblings as minors.

The stones in this cemetery must be memorials.
