Abel was born in Canada, the son of John and possibly Mary Sherman. The family arrived in Indiana about 1845 from Illinois. Abel was a gunsmith and was awarded a patent for adjusting gun-stocks. He married Martha Cadman on December 24, 1860 in Lake County, Indiana. The following children were born from the union: Alice A., Lydia A., Electa, George, Minta, John and Aledia. Abel enlisted in Company A of the 73 Infantry Regiment on August 8, 1862. He was mustered out on July 1, 1865 in Nashville.
