When Granvil Howard Bodkin was born on 14 Sept 1877, in Sugar Grove, Pendleton COunty, West Virginia, his father, George, was 28 and his mother, Eunice, was 24. He married Dora Isabel Kiser on November 17, 1898, in Pendleton County, West Virginia. They had four children, all boys, in 13 years.

Granvil was a farmer but spent a period of time in the early 1900s Overseeing the "paupers" as they performed duties at the poorfarm of Pendleton County WV. He fed and clothed all residents, provided med care and buried the dead. All on his annual salary of $165-$235 paid in two equal installments every 6 mos. Farm proceeds were turned over to the County.

Around 1920, he moved his family to McCoole, Maryland where he maintained a large farm with orchards. In 1940, he escaped serious injury when his stalled truck was hit on the railroad tracks near Keyser. He was knocked unconscious and required stitches in his forehead. However, he was soon diagnosed with cancer and died on October 10, 1941, in Keyser, West Virginia, at the age of 64.
