Wife of John Painter, Shirley graduated cum laud from the University of Michigan. She raised two children, Johnny and Jenny.

Shirley taught in the Tisbury school for many years. Upon retirement she went to work at the Vineyard Gazette as a proof reader.

She succumbed to Alzheimer's disease in May of 1983
