Ruby Sumpter, age 79, of Moulton, Iowa, was called home to the Lord on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at the Bakersfield-Heart Hospital in Bakersfield, CA.

Ruby was born August 5, 1927 in Centerville, Iowa to Frank and Eva (Brown) White. She was married to Robert P. Sumpter on July 28, 1945 in Centerville, Iowa. He preceded her in death.

Ruby is survived by a son, Gary(Darlene)Sumpter of Moulton, Iowa, daughter, Gloria (Rush) Melliti of Bakersfield, California, and son Rodger Sumpter of Hustiford, Wisconsin and daughters-in-law, Carolyn Sumpter of Hustiford, Wisconsin, Carmen Sumpter of Durango, Colorado and Mary Sumpter of Centerville, Iowa; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty one great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews; one aunt, Mertyl (Brown) Bromwell of Plains, Kansas; a special friend, Barbara Murdy of Moulton, Iowa; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Doyle and Bonnie Sumpter of Centerville, Iowa. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert White, Woodrow White and an infant; one sister Betty (White) Glasgow; two sons, Randy Sumpter and Milton Sumpter; one daughter, Julia Ann; daughter-in-law, Nikki (Hogg) Sumpter.

She was raised in Centerville, the daughter of a coal miner. She attended Centerville Schools. Ruby was a Nurse Assistant at Golden Age for a number of years while living in Exline. When the family moved to Moulton, she worked at the Bloomfield Nursing Home until disabled in a car accident in 1968.

Ruby and Robert were Evangelists and traveled from Tennessee to Rockford, Illinois. She and her husband ministered to a small church in Pecatonica, Illinois. Ruby and her family moved to Centerville in 1961 where they joined with the Reverend Hugh Sawyers and Jerry Thomas. Ruby played piano for their church tent revivals and sang on television with the gospel singers. Ruby was a proud mother and homemaker. After the death of her son Randy and daughter-in-law, Nikki, she and her husband took on the role of raising their granddaughter; Michele (Sumpter) White and Janelle (Sumpter) Thomas both of Albia.

Ruby and Robert were always a strong presence and religious influence in the lives of their grandchildren: Gary Jr., Tonya, Lisa, Mandy, Jamie, Robert, James, Jackie, Michele, Janelle, Julie, Joanne, Mike, Frank, Paula, Tracey, Tiffany, Mike, Crystal and Kelli Jo. Ruby was a member of the Dale Church of Centerville, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10 am Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at the Thomas Lange Funeral Home, Centerville with Pastor Gerald Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cincinnati, Iowa. A visitation will be held all day Tuesday from 2-8 pm with family present from 4-8 pm. There will be a lunch served and services at the Dale Church following burial. A memorial has been established to the Dale Church and may be left at the funeral home.
