America Canay Leo, age 91, of Ramirez, Texas passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2009. America was born on August 28, 1918 to Juan and Maria Ramirez Canay in Ramirez, Tx. As a a young girl she attended Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi and graduated from Benavides High School in Benavides, Tx. She attended Draughn's Business College in San Antonio graduating in 1938 followed by a BA in Business and a BS in Education from Texas A&I College in Kingsville in 1941. America served as an educator for 42 yrs teaching in Duval, Hidalgo, and Webb Counties.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Late Robert W. Leo and grandson John Adrian Leo, Jr.
She is survived by son John and Martha Leo and family; granddaughter Kara (Kado) Valenzuela and their four children and granddaughter Jana (Mike) Aguilar and their two children all of Alice, Tx; daughter Patricia (Mauro ) Garcia and granddaughter Andrea of Falfurrias, Texas; son Robert (Irene)Leo of Ramirez, Texas and granddaughter Elizabeth of Alice, Texas; daughter Myra (Billy) Atkins of Austin, Texas; daughter Tara (Ric) Thompson and grandson Ben of Austin, Tx.
America is also survived by her only sister Isabel Oliveira, of Weslaco, Tx along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
America will be missed greatly by her family who wishes to thank the Falfurrias Nursing and Rehab Center in Falfurrias, Tx and in particular Mrs. Emma Vela and Mrs. Linda Salazar both from Falfurrias for their loving care of our Mother.
A Rosary was on Tuesday October 27, 2009 at 7:00PM. at the Alaniz Funeral Home located at 516 North St. Mary's Street in Falfurrias, Tx. Burial services were at 11:00AM on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in Ramirez, Tx at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Mission Church.
In lieu of flowers, thje familyu requests contributions be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church Mission, P.O. Box 569; Premont, Tx 78375. America was instrumental in the building and maintenance of this church. Alaniz Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.
