August and his first wife, Caroline Meier, immigrated in 1872/1873. August was one of the organizers of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine, Texas. He was a farmer. August and Caroline had no children. After Caroline's death in 1904, August married Caroline Lange Schwenke.
The German verse on his gravestone translates: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for their achievements will follow them.
