Lewis was 6 years old when his father Samuel died, and he was placed in foster care with the George Smeltze family in Madisonburg, PA. Lewis learned the blacksmith trade and boarded a train with a friend bound for Illinois. In 1851, Lewis purchased 160 acres of land located in Wards Grove Township, Jo Daviess County near Kent, IL. He married Elizabeth Spaecht on April 2, 1851. He built a rock farm house, still standing as of 2015, and they raised 10 children. Mary Ellen, Celinda, Sophia, Rebecca Katherine (Kate), Sarah, Benjamin Franklin (Frank), Nancy Ann, Emma, George McClellan, And Adaline (Addie). Lewis and Elizabeth were very active until a few days before their deaths. At Lewis' funeral, over eighty wagons and buggy loads of mourners stayed through a severe thunder storm to attend. Lewis was the founder of the Kent Lutheran Cemetery, located one mile north of Kent, and was the third person buried there.
