Death Takes Retired Chief
Services will be held Friday for Floyd H. (Doc) Lyons, 77, of Ferry Rd., Chester, former Chester police chief. He died this morning at home after a long illness. Mr. Lyons served as police chief in Chester for 30 years, retiring in 1960. A native of Beaver County, he was the city's sole law enforcement officer for two decades after becoming chief in 1930. For the first 15 years of his service, he was on duty seven days a week, 12 or more hours a day until a Hancock County sheriff's deputy was assigned to assist him in 1845. A son of the late William and Mary Lyons, he was born at Hookstown Feb. 18, 1894. Prior to becoming an officer, he was employed by the Manufacturer's Light & Heat Co., the Finley Brothers Lumber Co., the Chester Cord Tire Corp. and the American Sheet & Tin Plate Co. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Stewart Lyons at home; a daughter, Mrs. Lester (Mary) Brown of Chester RD 1; a son, Earl F. Lyons of Chester; a brother, Allen J. Lyons of Chester; two grandchildren and four great - grandchildren. Services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 at the Welch Funeral Home in Hookstown. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
