O.P. Bechtel was born on his father's farm, in Northumberland county, Pa. He taught in local schools before being admitted to the bar in 1866. In August, 1877, the Democratic convention gave him a unanimous nomination for the office of judge of the Court of Common Pleas and was elected. He was succeeded in office by his son, Harry in 1907.
