He served in the civil war for nearly four years, was assistant adjutant-general to General John F. Reynolds, in command of the left wing of the Army of the Potomac; and on the first day of the battle of Gettysburg, that general died in Baird's arms. Baird was promoted to the rank of major for gallant conduct. He died near Ashland, VA.
