Wayne Cozzens, born September 21, 1920 in Tulia, Texas, to Seymour McKinley and Sallie Jane Goode Cozzens and died September 25, 2008 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Interment was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. He retired after a 38 year career in education. He taught and coached throughout the state of New Mexico.

He was preceeded in death by his mother, father and two infant brothers. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pat; and daughters and son-in-laws Rev. Larry and Peggy Cozzens Winchester of Arizona, Dan and Carolann Cozzens Meekins of Albuquerque; grandchildren Matthew Johnson and wife Rebecca of Mesa, Arizona, Jeanne Meekins Trujillo, her husband Elijah and Jason Meekins of Albuquerque.

Brothers, L.C. and Doyle of Roswell, New Mexico and Ken of San Marcos, California. Sisters, Eileen Cozzens Parsons, Jane Cozzens and Marilyn Cozzens of Roswell, New Mexico, and Cornelia Cozzens Grannis of Monrovia, California.

The first documented church we could find was his promotion certificate from the Cradle Roll Department to the Beginner Department in October 1923 at the Methodist Church in Texas. His father had been raised in the Methodist church and his Aunt was very strict and insisted on proper living. When we moved to Capitan, there not any churches close by, but there was a Nazarene church about 2 miles away. A rancher, Con Skinner lived nearby the church and got acquainted with the family and quickly won them over to the Nazarenes. This man was an uncle to Chloe Zumwalt Peters as was John Skinner, who married Dora DeArman. Dora was Grandpa Cozzens cousin.

He lettered in Basketball and Football during high School. He graduated from Capitan, High School in 1939. His letter sweater hangs in the Activities Association Building in Albuquerque. Daddy would eventually serve two terms as President of the State Athletic Association.

He graduated from Bethany Peniel College in 1946 with a Bachelor of Theology, and a Bachelor of Arts degree, specifically history. He played basketball at Bethany and won numerous awards there. When he came to New Mexico to teach, he went to the New Mexico Coaching School in 1948 and 1950.

He graduated in June, 1955 from Eastern New Mexico University with a Masters Degree in Administration. Mother and Peggy were there to see him receive this degree and joked with him that Peggy saw him get his Masters in Admin and he got to see Peggy get her Masters in Administration.

He was an avid Yankee fan and loved watching ballgames especially with his grandsons.

He was quite knowledgeable in Nazarene Church history. He could tell you all of the General Superintendents in order and heard all but the first two preach.
