Head-on crash near Bolivar kills Saulsbury woman, 67

BOLIVAR — A 67-year-old Saulsbury woman died at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital Wednesday morning after being involved in a traffic accident near here.

Graple Marshall Howell was driving south from Bolivar on Tennessee 18 around 9:08 a.m., when she was hit head-on by a car driven by Pamela L. Tate, 21, of Grand Junction, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said.

Tate, who was wearing a seat belt, was admitted to Community Hospital in good condition, the report said. Tate's 6-month-old daughter, Lakendra Tate, was Sitting in a child-restraint device when the accident happened and was unhurt, troopers said.

Although the accident is still under investigation, it appears Tate was driving on the wrong side of the road, troopers said.

Investigators could not determine if Howell was wearing a seat belt.

Services for Mrs. Howell will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Hope Church of Christ near Middleton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Howell, a retired psychiatric aide at Western Mental Health Institute, was married to the late Odis Haskell Howell. They had seven children, Vickey Smith of Bolivar, James Howell of Brownsville, Donnie Howell of Memphis, Caron Moore of Dallas, Bobby Howell of Phoenix, Ariz., Fay Jones of Lewistown, Mont., and Jerry Howell of the U.S. Armed Forces based in Germany.
