Bruce J. Dropesky passed away peacefully on November 10, 2009, after a brief illness. Bruce was born on April 29, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in Edgewater, New Jersey, where he attended Brooklyn Technical High School in New York City.
Bruce proudly served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII, based in England, returning to marry Beatrice Stehling (Miss San Antonio, 1948) of Fredericksburg, Texas in 1948. They were happily married for 56 years until Beatrice passed away in 2004.
The GI Bill enabled him to complete his undergraduate studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and he went on to receive a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in New York where he was a DuPont Fellow in Chemistry in 1951 and 1952.
Bruce joined the staff of Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) in 1953, and retired after a distinguished career in 1988. Amongst many other accomplishments,
Bruce served as part of the LASL team that discovered the isotope Thorium 236. He served as a Group Leader and Assistant Division Leader in CNC Division.
Two extended sabbatical postings gave the couple and their two children a broad experience of the world. 1964 was spent at the Laboratory in Harwell, England and in Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Bruce worked at Brookhaven Laboratory on Long Island, NY from January through June 1971.
He hosted many international visitors to the laboratory, and visited laboratories in the former soviet Union, China, and Japan.
Bruce served as the chair of the Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology of The American Chemical Society in 1978. After his retirement, Bruce continued to follow technical advances in his field.
Bruce and Beatrice were accomplished ballroom dancers, attending most of the big band dances in and around Los Alamos. Bruce participated in ballroom dance classes at the Los Alamos Senior Center, and many other dance opportunities. Bruce was avid in his enjoyment and support of the musical, dramatic, and dance arts. He appreciated beauty in all its forms.
Another of their passions was travel and sightseeing. He and Beatrice traveled the world, visiting over 85 countries, observing the great variety of different cultures and the exotic wonders of the ancient world. They especially enjoyed cruises, and exploring all the fascinating ports of call.
Bruce volunteered at the Betty Erhart Senior Center – vetting and selecting movies for weekly viewing for many years.
Bruce will be sorely missed by those fortunate enough to have known his generosity of spirit and loving kindness. He is an inspiration to us all.
Bruce is survived by his son, Bruce Phillip Dropesky of Los Alamos and his two daughters Whitney Lynn Minnich and Abbie Kay Minnich of Rapid City, SD; and his daughter, Elaine Hausman and her husband Rob Hausman of Cerrillos, NM, and their two children James and Eleanor; and his half-sister Adrienne Evans of Santa Monica, California.
A blessing and interment ceremony was held at Guaje Pines Cemetery on November 14 for the family.
A Celebratory Mass will be held on Saturday, December 5 at 11:00 am at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at 3700 Canyon Road, Los Alamos. A reception lunch will follow to honor Bruce Dropesky's inspiring character, adventurous life and considerable accomplishments.
The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate caregivers at Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Los Alamos Medical Center: Rehab Therapy Services, and the Los Alamos Medical Center, whose loving service made Bruce's final months so special.
