Walter was born and raised in Chicago. There were three brothers in the Nowakowski Family.
All three served in the Marines. Walter was the last of the three brothers to serve in Vietnam.
Walter enlisted in the Marines 15 December 1965, at a Chicago Recruiting Office.
Arriving in Vietnam 20 March 1967, Walter was assigned to CAP Alpha-1, 3rd Combined Action Company, 3rd Amphibious Forces, 3rd Marine Division.
At approximately 0400H, while the CAP patrol was returning from a night ambush, the CAP patrol entered the Echo, 2nd Battalion 26th Marine Regiment "kill zone" ambush site .Walter died as a result of a gunshot wound to the body when the CAP patrol was mistaken for hostile enemy forces approaching their ambush site, 2 kilometers north northwest of the Phu Bai Airfield.
Walter was single and served his country for 1 year, 10 months and 10 days and was KIA #17,365.
He had been in Vietnam for 7 months and 10 days.
Walter was 20 years, 9 months and 18 days old.
Survived by his parents; Edward J and Anna D Nowakowski and 2 his sisters; Charotte and Helene all of 6729 W Imloy St, Chicago, IL and his brother and sister-in-law; Cpl Lawrence and Arlene Nowakowski of 2D Hospital Company For Troops in Camp Lejeune, NC and brother; LCpl Edward J Nowakowski Jr serving with the Marines.
His grandparents;Walenty and Kate Nowakowski of Chicago, IL.
His girlfriend; Carole Patelski of 6725 Albion Ave, Chicago, IL.
Funeral services held at the Colonial Funeral Home, with MASS service at the St Theresa Church.
Awarded Purple Heart, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.
