Gene DeLong was born June 6, 1927, in Concordia, Cloud County, Kansas to Jesse and Georgene (Case) DeLong. The family lived in Mankato, Kansas where Gene lived his younger years and attained his early education.

During World War II, when old enough to do so, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until the war ended in 1945. When the Korean War broke out, Gene was recalled and served in the naval air service aboard the USS Boxer.

Gene married Billie Ilene Pierce in 1948. The couple raised a family of four daughters; Ginger, Penny and Laurie and one son, Steven. Gene passed away at his residence in Midland and was laid to rest in Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland.
