This little history was written by Mrs. Myrtle Barnes, a grand-daughter of Sarah Catherine (Gideon) West,a great tribute indeed, to such a wonderful worthy mother and grandmother.

"I feel it is an honor and privilege to write to you about our dear Grandmother, Saraj Catjerome Gideon West, who we loved and adored. She was a very lovely person, queen-like in her movements, walked very gracefully as though walking on air. We never heard her say an unkind ward.

From what I remember as a child, she was born in Harpers (or Martens) Ferry, West Virginia. She was a child during the Civil War. I remember her telling me that the Northern soldiers broke into their Chicken coop and stole their chicken. Her father was slave Superintendewnt. After the war, they migrated to the southern part of Ohio. Her mother made men's shirts by hand with fancy cuffs, and cuffs, and tucks down the front, to help support the family and offen sewed far into the night by light of coal Oil lamps.

Grandmother as a young lady was called the 'Belle of Badgerburg', for she was so pritty
