Phillip Reitz, 90, of Sterling, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, at his home.
Visitation and viewing began 10 a.m. today at the Chaney-Walters chapel. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Zion United Church of Christ with the Rev. Robert Howard officiating. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Reitz was born March 18, 1904 in Kukus, Russia to Phillip and Katherine Reitz. He lived in Russia during the Bolsheviks rule. He left Russia with his step sister, Katherine Nein in 1919, traveling through Poland and Germany, living in Frankfurt, Germany for eight months. From there they moved on to Heidelberg, where Katherine worked as a maid and Phillip as a busboy.
Their uncle, John Krumm of Sedgwick, sent them the money needed to complete their journey, and they arrived in Sedgwick by train in 1922. He was awarded his naturalization papers in Julesburg in 1939.
He married Marie Laufer Jan. 19, 1930. They worked together on the C.F. Parker Ranch near Jumbo Reservoir. They also farmed in the Crook and Iliff areas before moving to Sterling in 1949.
He also worked for Jessie's Bakery and Sterling Lumber Company,
retiring from Sterling Lumber in 1969.
He was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ.
Mr. Reitz is survived by his son, LeRoy and wife Shirley of Sterling, daughter Virginia Werner and husband Don of Sterling, five grand children, three great-grandchildren and two-step great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Marie, who died in 1980.
Chaney-Walters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
