OBITUARY

Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, August 6, 1931

MRS. CYNTHIA GILLESPIE

Mrs. Cynthia Gillespie died at her home a few miles south of Chariton on Wednesday, July 29, 1931, at the age of 84 years and 11 months, after an illness of several months with a complication of diseases. During her months of suffering she endured the pain uncomplainingly and was tenderly cared for by her loved ones.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. I. Dool, of Fairfield, formerly of this place, were held at her late home on Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, followed by burial in the Chariton cemetery. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, silent testimony of the high esteem in which she was held, as well as sympathy for those left in bereavement.

Cynthia Annetta Hays, daughter of Henderson and Olivia Hays, was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, on August 29, 1846. She came to Lucas county, Iowa with her parents when quite young, and was married near Chariton to John Taylor Gillespie on August 23, 1876. To this union one son was born, A. Hays Gillespie, who remains in the home.

In early life she was converted and was baptized and united with the Presbyterian church at Crabapple, Ohio. After coming to Lucas county she united with the United Presbyterian church, where she remained a member until the organization was disbanded, and then transferred her membership to the First Presbyterian church of Chariton.

She was a noble, Christian woman, adorning her life with the graces of true Christian character. She had genial manners, with a pleasant word and smile for all, and during her long residence here had won a large circle of friends who will greatly miss her presence.

Besides her son she leaves to mourn her departure two grandchildren, J. T. Gillespie and Mrs. Velma Culver, both of Chariton, and one great grandchild, Joan Gillespie, and other relatives.
