OBITUARY

J. T. GILLESPIE

Mr. J. T. Gillespie, one of the oldest and most substantial farmers of Benton township, died at his home 4 miles south of Chariton, Wednesday, May 17th.

Mr. Gillespie has been in poor health for four or five years and for the past year has been steadily failing. In September last he made a visit to his old home in Ohio with a hope that a change of climate would benefit him but there was no improvement.

Mr. Gillespie came to Lucas county in 1877 and purchased the land in which he made his home until his death. He was one of Lucas county's most enterprising farmers and by industry and good judgement had acquired a comfortable competence.

He was born in Belmont county, Ohio in 1845 and resided there until about 1870 when he removed to Lee county, Iowa, coming to Lucas county as we have before stated in 1877.

His wife, Mrs. Cynthia Gillespie and four children, Mrs. Ella Hopper and John M., William B. and Hayes, are left to mourn his untimely death and were all present at his bedside when the dissolution came.

Funeral services are being held at the family residence today and interment will be made in the Chariton cemetery of all that remains of this loving husband, kind father and upright citizen.
