Donelson T. Caffery, Sr. 96, a native and a resident of Franklin, died, Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at his residence.

Mr. Caffery is survived by his two sons, Donelson T. Caffery, Jr. of Franklin, Miller Gordon Caffery of Mandeville; three daughters, Lorraine Caffery Friedrichs of New Orleans, Sally Murphy Caffery of Highlands, NC and Caroline Caffery Gilly and son-in-law, Kennedy J. Gilly, III of Raleigh, NC.; seven grandchildren, Lee Knight Caffery, Donelson T. Caffery, III and Russell Lee Caffery, Kennedy Gilly IV, Caffery Gilly, Lorraine Gordon Caffery and Claudia Haik Caffery; one great grandson, Miller Murphy Caffery-Draa; one sister, Lydia Caffery Hilliard of Houston, TX.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Gordon Caffery; his parents, John Murphy Caffery and Mary Frere Caffery; one sister, Mrs. Ward T. (Mary) Jones; two brothers, John M. Caffery, Jr and Clegg Caffery.

The family requests that memorial visitation be observed Saturday, February 14th from 11am to 12noon at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Franklin, with a Memorial Service being held at the Church at 12noon.

Mr. Caffery was born on Mardi Gras night, February 20, 1912, he was a graduate of Louisiana State University and in 1934 received a Juris Doctor from Louisiana State University School of Law. He practiced law until World War II began. He was a Captain in the Army's Transportation Corps, for four years. He was stationed in New Guinea and Australia. After the war he left the practice of law to become a sugar planter when his father asked him to return to Franklin to help run the family business, Columbia Sugar Co. He and his brother, Clegg Caffery, ran the company for many years. He was charter member of the St. Mary Parish Library Board and was president of the Library Board in 1966 the year he won the James O. Modisette Award. He was one of the founding members of the Rotary Club of Franklin and a long time board member of St. Mary Bank and Trust Company. He was a past vestry member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, a member of the American Sugar Cane League, a member of the Louisiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, a member of St. Mary Chapter of Louisiana Landmark's Society, a Mason, a member of the Krewe of Achaens, and a past king of the Krewe of Sucrose. Mr. Caffery was a former member of the Cypremort Point Yacht Club. Mr. Caffery enjoyed reading about history especially ancient history and was an avid tennis player and sailor.
