Dawna Jane Callahan Herrud was born September 8, 1923, to Joseph and Jessie Callahan. She was raised in a log cabin with her siblings in Loa, Utah. She had 14 brothers and sisters. She is considered to be a true pioneer! She met the love of her life, Clarence Herrud, in Burbank, California, while working at an airplane factory that manufactured planes for World War II. It wasn't long after that they were married on February 21, 1943.
After the war they settled in Nyssa, Oregon and started their family. In 1958 they came to the Columbia Basin to be part of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project and develop land for farming. The Royal Slope is where they called home for 52 years and raised their 7 children.
Dawna was a loving homemaker and mother. She was extremely courageous and had a passion for reading and learning. She had many interests including genelogy, quilting, preserving food, making jewelry, and making porcelain dolls for her many granddaughters.
She was an active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the temple and served a mission in the Pine Ridge South Dakota mission. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Clarence Wilmer Herrud 17 years ago who came to get her and take her home on November 4, 2010. Her son Joe Herrud and 12 of her siblings have also passed on. She is survived by her 2 younger sisters Faye and Loya, 3 daughters Beverly (Ed) Garvey, Judy (Dee) Grimmer, Jana (Ed) Woodby and 3 sons, Michael (Shirley) Herrud, Larry (Susan) Herrud, and Dave (Carolyn) Herrud; as well as 31 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
The most important part of her life was the gospel of Jesus Christ. Her testimony, that she learned as a young girl, is one that grew as she got older and still lingers in the heart of all of her posterity.
