At his father's death in 1696 he became stadtholder of Friesland, being this function since 1675 hereditary. Until 1706 he stood under the regency of his mother. In 1708 he also became stadtholder of Groningen.
His father was a cousin of Prince William III of Orange, since 1689 King or England, Scotland and Ireland and after the death of the latter he inherited most of his possessions. In 1707 Johan Willem Friso became Captain-General of Friesland. By them the War of the Spanish Succession was sweeping Europe. He distinguished himself in the battles of Oudenaarde (1708), Malplaquet (1709) and Douai (1710).
