Add PhotosIn 1795 the Netherlands were occupied by French troops. This was followed by the so-called Velvet Revolution.
The hatred towards the aristocracy of the ancien régime included the former stadtholders and their family. In the month of August their monuments were destroyed, the vault was opened and plundered, coffins of zinc or lead were stolen to be remelted and the bones and skulls thrown away.
After World war II a wooden new monument was erected and scutcheons were hanged on the walls.
