Inscription

Martha Aurora Hugman
Her Poem
At twilight among the hills
Upon my listless heart fell faintly
The plaintive call of the Whippoorwill
Then for one moment in its march
Its relentless march to eternity
Time stood still.

Still we stood together, Time and I
Listening for the answer to his call
The mating call of the Whippoorwill,
A breathless pause and then from high it came
Among the branches of the tallest tree
An eager trill.

One moment set apart for love
Time will linger long
Fleet moment
Oh how short how empty all the rest
Yet for a hundred added years
Who would let you pass and
Miss the best.
