An 81-year-old janitor, Ilario Bertuccio, was shot that same evening while walking on his way home from work in the Bay View district. He died almost instantly after four shots to the shoulder and chest. His assailants were convicted and are currently incarcerated in a California prison.

The incident involving Ilario was one of several which took place in San Francisco between 1973 and 1974, dubbed the "Zebra" murders. The story is detailed in Clark Howard's book, "Zebra".
