Jacob Elam Simon, aka Jake (according to my father) was my great grandfather.

Jacob was born January 5, 1842 in Lewis Co, VA and died at Carterville, MO on July 25, 1892.

Jacob was the son of George Simon & Celia Reger Simon.

Jacob's death in 1892 was "the result of a freak wagon accident". He kept a team of horses and wagon to do hauling and excavating for basements and foundations for the early businesses of Carterville (MO). On July 25, he was in his wagon, had just turned the corner of Fountain and Main Streets, and the steel tires on his wagon skidded on some street car rails. He was standing up in the wagon, at this point, and fell or was thrown off the wagon, hitting his head. He died within a few hours.

Article in THE CARTHAGE PRESS dated 28 July 1892 tells of this accident:

"Parties up from Carterville today report a peculiar death at that place yesterday. Jacob Simons, a teamster, was thrown from his wagon in crossing the streetcar track. He struck on his head, apparently causing concussion of the brain and he died in four hours. His funeral was held today."

Jacob had served his country during the Civil War. He enlisted in the Army of the United States on June 18, 1864 and served as a Private in Company K in the Fourth Regiment of the Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia. He served 267 days. He was paid for 8 months and 21 days of service. Military records do not indicate any disability or hospital treatment. He was discharged on March 11, 1865.

Jacob married Frances Curl (see her bio for info) on August 17, 1873. To this union came 9 children: Nancy (Nannie), Stella, Edward (my grandfather), Grace, Harry (called Dick), Susan, Lena (Eva Lena), Mary and John Reger. Girls Stella, Susan and Lena died very young.

No known photos of Jacob exist.

Jacob's "Simon ancestors" came from Germany. His mother's ancestors (Reger) came from Switzerland. Both sides ended up in Virginia with Jacob's parents coming to northern MO before the Civil War. Jacob and family eventually settled in Carterville to raise their family.
