ANN AMELIA BEAL

Ann Amelia Beal was born on June 17, 1845 in Tazewell County, Illinois, the daughter of Lewis Beal and Mary Ann (Holland) Beal, whom according to the family Bible were married on March 5, 1838/37 in Tazewell County, Illinois. Lewis Beal was born on August 30, 1815 in __________, Pennsylvania and died on November 10, 1866 in Fort Scott, Kansas. Mary Holland was born on February 6 or 8, 1821 in Sangamon County, Illinois the daughter of William Holland and Lavisa (Vise) Bess Holland, and died on November 20, 1898 in Fort Scott, Kansas. Ten children are believed to have been born to Lewis and Mary. They are;

3. James H. BEAL, born c. 1839 in Tazewell Co., Illinois
4. William Holland BEAL, born on May 4, 1841 in Washington, Tazewell Co., Illinois; died on November 23, 1906 in Central Point, Oregon.
5. Sylvia Jane BEAL, born c. 1842 in Tazewell Co., Illinois
6. Ann Amelia BEAL, born c. 1845 in Tazewell Co., Illinois
7. Alonzo BEAL, born c. 1849 in Tazewell Co., Illinois

Ann, who most often went by her middle name, Amelia, was first married to Thomas Jefferson Denton on March 22, 1862. Thomas is known to have enlisted in the service of the Union Army and to have died while in the service. Jefferson Denton was a 1st Lieutenant in Troop L of the 6th Regiment of Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. He died of small pox while stationed at Fort Scott, Kansas on November 20, 1863. Amelia was pregnant with their first and only his child at the time of his death and after his death gave birth to a son, whom she named Thomas Jefferson Denton Jr.

Amelia was married 2nd on July 24, 1866 to Jeptha (once listed as Jefferson) B. King in Fort Scott, Kansas. Jeptha was born about 1841 in Ripley, Brown County, Ohio. Jeptha was one of at least eight children born to Rufus King and Susan W. (Mason) King. The Kings moved west to Illinois about 1851, where they settled near Eureka, Illinois in Olio Township of Woodford County. Jeptha was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Co. A of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He volunteered for service on July 26, 1862, was mustered into service on August 27, 1862 and served honorably for nearly three years before being mustered out of the service on June 27, 1865 in Washington, D.C. He then returned to his home in Woodford County. He remained there only a short time before moving west to Fort Scott, Kansas, where he was married to Amelia. They were the parents of at least six children. They are;
1. William R. "Willie" King, born c. 1867 at Fort Scott

2. Ida King, born c. 1870 at Deerfield Township, Vernon County, Missouri

3. Aubrey Forrest King, born c. 1875 in Henry Township, Vernon County, Missouri; At the time of the 1910 and 1920 census records, Aubrey is found residing in Vernon County, Missouri with his half brother, Thomas J. Denton; At the time of the 1940 census, Aubrey is found residing in Stotesbury, Henry Township, Vernon County, Missouri;

Aubrey is almost certinly the Aubrey F. King who was born in 1875 and who died in 1952 and whose earthly remains were laid to rest in the Lath Branch Cemetery in Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas.

4. Maud King, born c. 1878 in Henry Township, Vernon County, Missouri

Jeptha, Amelia and their children are found residing in Vernon County, Missouri at the time of the 1870 and 1880 Census' of the United States. In the 1880 census, Jeptha is listed as Jefferson King. In the 1880's they apparently returned to Fort Scott, Kansas, where Ann Amelia (Beal) Denton King is believed to have died. Amelia died on Aug. 1, 1891 in Bourbon County, Kansas.
